Our water is naturally high in Iron and Manganese.  We treat the water at our treatment plant to remove Iron and Manganese to get to acceptable levels in our drinking water.  However, here’s the background on these minerals in the water:

Iron

Typical Source of Contaminant: Leaching from natural deposits; industrial wastes

Health Effect Notes: There are no PHGs, MCLGs, or mandatory standard health effects language for these constituents because secondary MCLs are set on the basis of aesthetics

Manganese

Typical Source of Contaminant: Leaching from natural deposits

Health Effect Notes: The notification level for manganese is used to protect consumers from neurological effects. High levels of manganese in people have been shown to result in effects of the nervous system.

Earlier in the year, our treatment plant media was getting to the end of its 10-15 year life and our Iron and Manganese levels crept up – they even went slightly over the limit for a month or so.

Now that the treatment plant media has been replaced, we are back to our normally low levels of Iron and Manganese in the treated water.

Lorenzo
